I am currently playing Siemens PLM Chess tournament in Pune. This is tournament which is held annually in Siemens to select its Team for Inter IT Chess Competitions. The event attracts some very good players working with Siemens Pune. n
In the Semi Final I was expecting a strong contest because in a Knock out tournaments only consistent winners reach the Semis. Consistent win is something which I admire in people. Australian Cricket Team in yester years, Warren Buffet in Stocks and though personally despised Shahrukh for giving hits and winning local awards.
The usual game begun and we started locking horns on the central squares. The best part about the tournament is the speed which you have to play. The first guy with 30 minutes on the clock loses. So chess becomes a high neuron rather than stretch neuron battle. While I was able to make out the motive behind his moves, I think he failed to read that I was working towards developing all my pieces simultaneously to launch a massive attack. With force concentration and build up a hole is what I was looking for. His desperate and sudden attack gave me a chance and in a blast his defence were ripped apart. I think it was rather unkind to blow away a Semi Finalist in 12 minutes straight. He resigned and ran away. I could feel how dejected he was. This got me thinking about the immortal lines written by Stephen Covey. He said – ” Besides Boxing, Chess is the most inhuman game man has ever invented “
The game crushes the mental confidence of the looser. He is expected to collect all his intelligence to fight and is utterly annihilated by mind power of the winner. When I reflected back on this , I was transported back to my child hood days. In a family of 50 in Calcutta Chess was a whole day engagement with not one guy playing again another but groups playing against each other.
After each move the parties discussed how to counter and it became a more participatory sport than even bull fights. As a child of of 9 yrs I had shown a good level of proficiency to beat olders and this was their way to humiliate me. Groups of 5-7 on 1 side dissecting every move of mine. Giving interpretations and then making a collective move.
On loosing material, resignation was not the option . The only way game could end was through Cheque-mate. To make the humiliation more killing they loved to give pawn mate ( Mating move to be done by the most worthless pawn). The king of loosing side used to be paraded , forked, insulted by pieces . He was relegated to move only on 2 squares and with a lot of deliberations the mate used to occur. I remember having cried for those humiliations.
Those scenes let my thoughts meander to modern international Chess where a lot of psychological warfare equivalent to Sledging has percolated. I heard about non Gentlemanly behaviour by Garry Kasparov where in he bangs pieces on board, makes vicious faces towards the opponent and leaves the seat in between the game to humiliate. I started hating Garry for this and then I met my Finals opponent today. I decided that irrespective of the final to be played next week I would make human contact with him. During our discussion about the game , he told me that the bullying tactics were inflicted on Kasparov by his arch rival Karpov. Such was the pressure on Kasparov that he vomited out during the game. If the reasons for his vomiting were purely psychological then Covey’s comment is not far fetched.
On reflection , I thought resignation is the most humanizing step done to this game. The game continues to wreck the mental hygiene of people who play it

Recently I wanted to get a window AC re installed at my home and ran into trouble with the company service department. Never to be satisfied with a shoddy job. I again took up a battle. The letter to the service department is attached below : ( Can be reused as template for waging similar fights) and the result is at the end of it. Read on and enjoy one more consumer victory :)
Sir,
I had booked the a/m service call for installation of Window AC at my residence and am appalled at the unprofessionalism shown by your technician. The following are facts of this transaction.
- The service call was booked on 10th Mar afternoon and I was told that the technician will reach on the same day. The person however arrived on 13th evening after 2 reminders.
- At home , he insisted on taking payment for visit (350) + Servicing charge wet (350) + installation charge (750) . This however after speaking to Mr XXXX was reduced to Installation (750) + servicing (350). However on perusal of service rate list I discovered that visit +service charge was mentioned as 350.. It seems the technician was bent on charging unfair.
- He didn’t bring sufficient material to do installation ( He neither had wood planks, nor cleaning material, nor packing and sealing material.
- After AC installation he tried to seal the AC using cardboard strip . When I questioned how can cardboard resist decay even in small rain. He stupidly argued that rain wont reach that place.
- Subsequently , I had to provide him insulating material ( Black foam) . He did a slip sod job and left gaps at most places. On perusal and inspection next morning I discovered that he had left gaps all around.
- He didn’t have white clay for sealing the edges.
- He was most incourteous in demanding cleaning material and barked ” Karwana hai to karwao, nahin to jaane do ( If you want to get things done, oblige me.. or let me go “
I fail to understand that if this is the slip shod work done by reputed company representatives , then the local electrician whom I paid Rs 350 for installation lat time did an outstanding job. Having experienced this , I have following options coming to my mind .
- Inform it to you officially and seek redress.
- Send it to newspapers to highlight your Quality of service
- Put it on forums mouthshut.com etc so that people know the standards you have.
- Inform your competitors so that they can highlight it in various forums.
- File a consumer case to seek penal damages for deficiency in service.
- Upload this on my Blog for the world to know what service you stand for.
Do let me know the level to which this fight needs to go.
The mail had a glavanising effect on the service department. On the following day 3 of the company top officials including Regional Service head came to my apartment to evaluate the degree of negligence by company rep. THey were convinced about the company fault. They offered the following :
-
Reinstalling the AC.
-
Using top end heat insulating PU material to do the sealing.
-
Complete carpentry work to make new frame for AC.
-
Paint work to match the color of wood to main window color.
-
A free Wet service at the end of season ( Before rains set in)
-
6 months maintenance and repair holiday ( No charge defect repair)
-
An offer to sell a split AC at company prices ( less than dealer offerings)
So ended one more successful consumer fight. So fight on

What he did was …. He sent this mail to Asia Zone manager of Apple.. Who finding it tough to handle, escalated the case to Australia. The company was shaken at the prospect of this story going to media and suggested that the customer speak on their two Toll free numbers.. The first number was accessible only by MTNL landlines(Which are like searching a needle in Haystack in this age of Telecom corporatisation). The other number he tried 12 times a day was always connecting to silence which only were adding to his STD expenses and futile efforts… He finally thought of giving up futile calls and requested the company to call him back instead. The company told him point blank that they do not have policy of making outbound calls to customers.
Frustrated, he knew pleading was not taking him anywhere and decided to file a case in Consumer Court on the following day…He also told the company about the same.. Barely , few hours had passed ,that company woke up to the threat of litigation and cost associated to it ..it called up the customer and said they were making an exception and promised replacement of his ipod without any cost .. even though it was outside the initial warranty. The ipod came delivered to him in 2 days flat.. So a great fight for consumer right once again had a happy ending. Hope , people reading this will feel inspired to take up big fights with great organizations when they think they can exploit citizens
Also a few conclusions from the story :
As consumers we should never let our expectations drop .
Consumer courts are the weapons in hand of people and empower them to give fight to company of any size.
There is enormous power in writing and possibility of putting explosive writing on huge display canvas drives the message to those who really need it.
You can use Media power to your great advantage.
The companies are very vulnerable to ‘Loss of credibility ‘ and would always break their own rules to protect their good will..
So when you feel , you have been wronged with.. take the fight to the Hilt ..and I am sure you will win , the way He did

I had taken a home loan from SBI gurgaon branch for my apartment @ Calcutta new town. The SBI agent during processing told me that processing charges of Rs 10000 (Ten Thousand ) are waived off for Army and Air Force residential schemes.
However after the loan was sanctioned and disbursed , I found that Rs 10000/= were debited from my account on processing charges. I called up the SBI manager on at least 20 occasions from Pune where I am based currently.
I wrote him a mail stating the anomaly needs to be resolved but this produced no results . I filed an online complaint on which inintally there was no action. It was then that I contacted the SBI branch manager at Hinjewadi Pune. In the mean time I had sent almost 20 emails to SBI Gurgaon but without avail. He told me to file a complain again online as transferring of Home loan to a different city was not possible. I just did that and waited for 5 days.
After 5 days , I received an email from SBI help desk stating that the issue was being forwarded to Delhi zonal manager for solution.
Nothing happened for next 4-5 days ..and exasperated i wanted to raise a level to file a case in the consumer redressal forum. I do not know why but I thought of checking my home loan account. I found that the amount of Rs 10000/= had been credited back to my account.. The folks at SBI did their job. THey didnt write a mail.. they didnt speak to me. they didnt write a mail back to me but they did what was financially essential.. I had a hearty laugh as I remebered their Slogan- ” Pure Banking , Nothing Else”
SBI finally gives in. Pure Banking ..nothing else March 4, 2008
